STEAM Picture Books for children

Are you looking for STEAM focused books for young children?  I have compiled the titles that are available in my library.  Definitely getting some more.

I am compiling chapter books as well since STEAM (UK version of STEM) is the school's focus at the moment.

Library Week

My library is celebrating Library Week this September in accordance of International School Library Week of IAASL.  This year, I adopted the theme of School Libraries Transform Learning from AASL.

Book Club

Are you looking for a book club based in Asia?  I just ran one as one of our activities in celebration of World Book Week.  This kind of activity is quite popular in UK based schools because it is easier if most publishers are your neighbors, right? But do not fret, we can now enjoy the same activity in Asia through this new online bookstore A Bookstore Asia

Normally, prices are in USD but you can request for the local currency to make it more inviting to parents.  What I like about it, just giving them 5 orders, you get all the books in the catalog we distributed for free. I actually received some of our free books.

Oh by the way, they will ship the books straight to your student's home address.

Offering free shipping in Asia, this could be the new Amazon of Asia.

STORY TIME: Storyteller Visit

We are ecstatic to have international storyteller, Dr. Margaret Read Macdonald to visit our school for advance celebration for our upcoming World Book Week and World Read Aloud Day.

The children got thrilled to see the face behind the books that they've been borrowing from the library, come into real life.  It's just magical.

Take a look at one of her storytelling session with our Year 2s.

International Book Giving Day

This coming February, instead of giving chocolates and flowers, why not give a book to random people that you will meet on the road.

It's the International Book Giving Day and join the fun of spreading knowledge.

Last year, I left a couple of copies of the book " The Lost Story Project" by Marisa Chayavivatkul at a mall in random places.  I hope it reached the good hands to pay it forward by reading it and doing the same thing this year.

Anyways, here's the official poster of this year event. Feel free to print and display around your library.

Get involved and spread the love of giving with this cool ideas from Book Giving Day website.

Boy’s Contrite Note Over Torn Library Book Brings Cheers

This story made me laugh but touched by the sincerity of the boy and felt really sorry for what he have done.

A young reader is earning kudos after 'fessing up to the Toronto Public Library in a handwritten note that he inadvertently damaged a borrowed book when he fell asleep while reading.

“I am sorry that a page ripped when it fell out of my bunk when I fell asleep reading. It won’t happen again. I’m sorry. From Jackson,” read the note inside a card addressed to “Library.”

The library posted the note on its Facebook page Saturday and wrote that it had been found in the book drop at the Main Street branch.

The library told ABC News that it didn’t know Jackson’s age.
According to the CBC News, the note accompanied a torn comic book that had been repaired with tape.

More than 3,700 people had liked the post as of Tuesday evening.
“How precious! Yay for kids that still read a book before falling asleep!” commented one poster, while another added: “You're so honest Jackson! Keep it up. Falling asleep while reading happens to everyone. So don't worry. I know the library will understand. And your gesture to be apologetic and honest is the most important lesson here. Thanks for inspiring us old folks.”

Vickery Bowles, the library’s city librarian, told ABC News in a statement that the response to the letter has been heartwarming.

“It’s clear that many people around the world have also been touched by Jackson’s sweet note. I think Jackson has reminded us – young and old alike – about the joy of reading, especially a good bedtime story!” she wrote.

STORY TIME: Storyteller Visit

We are happy to have a special storyteller visited our school.  She is from the National Library of the Philippines, the head of Children's Section, Ms. Melanie "Melai" Ramirez.

The children enjoyed the dancing, the singing and of course the listening to the story.  Teachers were also asked to participate in the storytelling as well.

Here's a glimpse of our storytelling for Year 1 pupils.

STORY TIME: The Dot, Ish by Peter Reynolds

I love to read these series of books to my lower graders.  These books gives them confidence to believe in themselves and create things (like drawing)even if they feel that no one will appreciate it.  These books.from Peter Reynolds teaches children to learn that each one of us are special and have special gift that we can be proud of.

Reading Technology: Best Books for Tweens [iPad App]

This app is becoming popular to my middle graders most especially to my book lovers.  They can find titles that interests them.  I can also find good titles for our collection.  Book summary is available, ratings from readers can be viewed, you can create your own personal wishlist and recommended titles by age level. It's easy to navigate the app.  It would have been nice though if they can include a sample page or illustration of each title. Overall, it handy and helpful.  Oh, and it's FREE!

My Book List: Aung San Suu Kyi

"The only real prison is fear, and the only real freedom is freedom from fear."

Aung San Suu Kyi A Portrait in Words and Pictures

For this Women's Month, I pick this biography of one of the living hero of Burma for my own reading.  This book tells how she was raised by a tough mother after her father was assassinated.  She was trained how to be strong willed, disciplined not knowing that she'll be leading her people where his father left off.  This is an interesting read for anyone who is into history.

International Book Giving Day 2015

The first time I proposed this activity to the Primary, the idea made me nervous as it might not be supported by the EMT.  But I stand corrected and they actually love the idea.  The International Book Giving Day falls on Valentine's Day, the school has another reason to celebrate love by giving and sharing experience by reading.

In just 2 days of placing the boxes around the school, we received 5 boxes of books with a bag of children's toys.

I hope their little hands will get occupied browsing over the books we have collected from our generous teachers, pupils and parents.

Oh, me and little boy left books at the mall waiting for someone to get inspired reading it.  We are trying to teach him to live by the principle "always be a blessing to others even in our own small way".
